A Gift That Truly Kept on Giving

by | Jan 7, 2026 | District News

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting Mel Hager, now is the perfect time to be introduced. Mel serves as the president of the Keego Harbor Optimist Club, and recently reminded all of us that Optimism often shows itself through creativity, generosity, and heart.

Those stunning floral centerpieces that graced the tables at our 1st Quarter Gathering in Auburn Hills didn’t just appear by magic. They were thoughtfully created and generously donated by Mel himself. Each arrangement added warmth, beauty, and a welcoming touch to the event—and many of us were pleasantly surprised to discover that such artistic talent was right here among us. While Mel’s home club may have long known of his creative gifts, the Gathering gave the rest of us the chance to appreciate them too.

But the story didn’t end with table décor.

Attendees were invited to take a centerpiece home in exchange for a donation to the Optimist International Foundation. Most of the arrangements found new homes that very day, helping boost our District’s contribution to OIF for the year—a beautiful example of generosity supporting generosity.

And then came the final chapter of this story.

A few centerpieces remained after the event, and thanks to Past Governor Pam Barckholtz, they were given yet another meaningful purpose. The remaining arrangements were delivered to the West Hickory Haven Nursing Center in Milford, Michigan, where they were enjoyed by approximately 60 residents. Along with the flowers, residents were also treated to a vibrant, handmade Afghan blanket—also created by Mel—bringing added warmth, color, and comfort to their days.

From beautifying a District gathering, to supporting the Optimist International Foundation, to brightening the lives of nursing home residents, Mel’s efforts truly embodied the Optimist spirit. His time, talent, and generosity created a ripple effect of kindness that reached far beyond the original event.
