A unique and engaging activity was held at the Fall District Gathering, to encourage connection, conversation, and a sense of community among members. Upon entering the room, each participant was given a playing card, and tasked with holding onto it for the entire day. This seemingly simple gesture sparked a chain of interactions that would shape the day in unexpected and delightful ways.
The concept was based on prompting participants to think about their personal preferences, traditions, and requirements. As the day progressed, individuals were encouraged to connect with others who had cards that were “near” to theirs—whether through number or suit. The goal was clear: to create conversations between people who might not have interacted otherwise, fostering a sense of inclusivity and creating opportunities for new friendships and dialogues to flourish. In many cases, this activity led people to step out of their comfort zones and connect with someone they might not have typically approached.
The second part of the activity was even more interactive. Participants were asked to find the person in the room who held the exact same card as they did. This simple but effective prompt brought a buzz of excitement and anticipation to the room as individuals began searching for their matches. Leadership Development Chair, Michelle Kauffold, who played a key role in organizing the event, held onto the five remaining cards at the end of the activity. With her warm enthusiasm, she made sure that those who hadn’t yet found their match were given the chance to connect. The excitement continued as she helped bring the final pieces of the puzzle together, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to participate fully.
The success of the activity was evident in the laughter, connections, and conversations that filled the room. It was a reminder of the power of small, thoughtful gestures in bringing people together. I’m sure there are many more photos out there, capturing these heartwarming moments that I have yet to receive, but one thing is for sure: the joy and excitement that reverberated throughout the room reflected optimism at its very best!
