Members of the Greater Lansing Optimist Club (GLOC) celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10) by providing breakfast for teachers and staff at North School in the Lansing School District. Club members served pastries, bagels, yogurt, fruit, and juice to nearly 50 teachers and staff members. They also presented each teacher with hand-written thank you messages, as well as thanking them personally.
About half of GLOC’s members are retired teachers or former school staff members, so supporting the adults who teach our youth is especially important to our members. Several club projects have sprung from memories of what they would have appreciated when they were working in the classroom.
The Greater Lansing Optimist Club “adopted” North School, an economically challenged K-8 school, at the start of the 2023-24 academic year. They began by welcoming students and handing out pencils on the first day of school. Throughout the fall and winter, the club collected coats, hats, gloves, and socks to keep students warm; then supplied tissues to classrooms for cold and allergy season.
To celebrate Reading Month in March, the club provided several hundred books for a student book fair and sponsored a bookmark contest. The club is looking forward to expanding its presence at North School next year.
