New Facebook Page for the Michigan District

Why the new Facebook Page?

We created the Facebook PAGE because the purpose of a Facebook Page is to connect with an audience. A PAGE is better suited to promote our Michigan Optimists Zones and Clubs. It allows us to share news and announcements with an audience outside just our members. A PAGE is public. What we had was a Facebook Group. A Group exists for discussion and interaction between members. You have to ask to join the group, and be accepted. Only members within the group can see the content in the group. (So, in essence it is Private)

We wanted to be able to “Facebook Live” some of our events. That can only be done from a Facebook Page. We wanted to create an Instagram account, to reach a different demographic than we can reach with our Facebook page. That also can only be done from a Facebook Page. The Facebook page allows us the ability to schedule posts to publish automatically. Successful pages need constant posts, and it is not always possible for the admins to be able to do so. But dedicating some time each week to schedule posts helps us keep our messages constant. Finally, a page gives better analytics to see how our posts and ads are doing.

What is our goals for Social Media?

Especially during times where travel and large group gatherings are not possible, we want to be able to maximize exposure of programs. For example we were able to live stream our Oratorical contest this year. Other events, such as our District meetings, can be partially shown on Facebook Live.

We have thought about a monthly “Barstool Optimism” type program, where we can highlight local successes and help clubs promote upcoming major events. Two or three regular hosts can talk about topics, and then promote Optimism with a special guest each program.

We want to encourage Zones and Clubs to submit major activities and milestones. The District page can increase your impact not only within your community, but also state wide, and maybe even with Optimist International. As the page grows, its reach will grow, and hopefully, increased shares will bring interest for new members, and new groups.

Bottom Line, we want to help you promote optimism, but we also need you to participate and help us.

Thank You!

Yours in Optimism,

Grant Smith
