MORLEY — Students at Morley Stanwood Elementary took to the track Friday, May 9, for the school’s annual fun run, a high-energy fundraiser promoting health and community involvement, made possible in part by a donation from the Mecosta County Optimist Club.

The Optimists provided pedometers for every student participating in the event, following a suggestion by school social worker Tara Lovejoy.
The devices, personalized with the word “Mohawks,” encouraged students to track their steps and embrace physical activity throughout the day.
“This fun walk-run has been going on for several years,” Michelle Kauffold of the Optimist Club said. “Tara asked if we could afford pedometers for the whole school, and from our fundraising efforts, that’s what we bought.”
The total cost came to just under $1,000.
Kauffold said the club hopes to apply for a matching grant through Optimist International to help offset the cost.
