The Michigan District Optimists’ Fall District Gathering was a resounding success, filled with inspiration, camaraderie, and the spirit of making a difference. A special thank you goes out to Jeanette and Joy, who shared their unique skills and community-focused project with all of us.
Jeanette and Joy introduced us to the art of making “plarn”—a creative and sustainable craft that transforms everyday grocery bags into something extraordinary. “Plarn,” short for plastic yarn, is created by cutting grocery bags into strips, knotting them together, and rolling them into balls. This ingenious material is then crocheted by Joy into practical items that contribute to Disaster Relief at Work (DRAW).
What is DRAW?
DRAW, or Disaster Relief at Work, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing aid and relief to individuals and communities affected by natural disasters. The organization relies on volunteers like Joy, who use their talents to create handmade items that are distributed to people in need during emergencies.
Why Plarn?
By repurposing grocery bags, plarn not only helps reduce waste but also creates durable, lightweight, and water-resistant materials. These are ideal for making sleeping mats and other essential items that DRAW distributes to disaster victims. The plarn project is a beautiful example of how small actions—like collecting and cutting up grocery bags—can have a big impact on people facing hardship.
Optimists in Action
At the gathering, Optimist Club members rolled up their sleeves and dove into the plarn-making process. It was a hands-on way to demonstrate the Optimist motto of “bringing out the best in youth, our communities, and ourselves.” The enthusiasm in the room was palpable as members learned how their effort could contribute to helping those in crisis.
The event highlighted the power of collaboration and the importance of small but meaningful contributions. Each grocery bag turned into plarn represents hope, resilience, and the Optimist spirit of service.
How You Can Help
Would you like to join the effort? Here’s how you can get involved:
1. Collect Grocery Bags: Save clean, used grocery bags instead of throwing them away.
2. Learn to Make Plarn: Cut bags into strips, knot them together, and roll them into balls.
3. Volunteer: Connect with DRAW or your local Optimist Club to contribute your plarn creations.
4. Spread the Word: Share the idea of making plarn with your friends and family to expand the reach of this impactful project.
Thank You!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Jeanette and Joy for sharing their time, talent, and dedication with the Michigan District Optimists. Their leadership and passion inspire us to look for creative ways to serve our communities and support those in need.
