The Greater Lansing Optimist Club recently celebrated a major milestone — five years of bringing optimism, service, and community spirit to Michigan’s capital region. Members gathered on Tuesday, September 30, for a special anniversary dinner that reflected both gratitude for the past and excitement for the future.
A Celebration of Optimism and Friendship
The evening welcomed several distinguished guests, including Sean Mueller, attending on his final day as Michigan District Governor; Dave Putt, the incoming District Governor, and his wife, Diane; and Lieutenant Governor Toni Gore. Their presence underscored the strong connection between local clubs and the broader Optimist community across Michigan.
Recognizing Dedication and Service
During the celebration, the club proudly honored Annette Shauver as its very first Optimist of the Year, recognizing her dedication and leadership. Charter members Bill and Mary Wahl were also acknowledged for their lasting commitment since the club’s founding.
Members enjoyed a special “Year in Review” video, reflecting on service projects, community partnerships, and the friendships built over the past year. To commemorate the occasion, each member received a custom club t-shirt featuring the Greater Lansing Optimist Club logo on the front — and a timeless message on the back:
“Promise yourself… to look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.”
Giving Back — and Looking Ahead
In true Optimist spirit, members also brought donations of school supplies — including disinfecting wipes, tissues, pencils, markers, paper, notebooks, and rulers — for classrooms at Lansing’s North School. It was a fitting gesture that reflected the club’s ongoing commitment to supporting local youth and education.
As the club enters its sixth year, optimism in Michigan continues to grow. Across the state, new members are joining local clubs every month, inspired by the chance to make a difference in their communities.
If you’ve ever wanted to get involved, make new connections, and bring out the best in yourself and others, there’s never been a better time to join an Optimist Club. The Greater Lansing Optimist Club — and clubs across the Michigan District — welcome new members who believe in the power of positive thinking and community service.
